Peatland Code

“The Peatland Code is an example of natural capital financing. The Peatland Code is a voluntary standard for UK peatland projects wishing to market the climate benefit of restoration.

The Peatland Code provides assurance and clarity for business and other investors in peatland restoration projects through independent validation and verification. The Peatland Code works on the basis that during restoration, carbon savings are made through rapid emissions reductions.” – IUCN UK Peatland Programme (iucn-uk-peatlandprogramme.org)

What Is The Peatland Code?

“The Peatland Code is a voluntary certification standard for UK peatland projects wishing to market the climate benefits of peatland restoration and provides assurances to voluntary carbon market buyers that the climate benefits being sold are real, quantifiable, additional and permanent.” – IUCN UK Peatland Programme (iucn-uk-peatlandprogramme.org

“The UK Peatland Strategyhas set a challenge for 2 million hectares of peatland to be in good condition or under restoration management by 2040. To achieve this goal a significant funding gap must be addressed presenting opportunities for the business community. By supporting Peatland Code projects through the purchase of validated and verified carbon units, businesses will have an opportunity to not only address their carbon footprint but also enhance their brand integrity and value, deliver corporate sustainability objectives and contribute strategically to the long-term protection and enhancement of the UK natural environment.” – IUCN UK Peatland Programme (iucn-uk-peatlandprogramme.org)

Peatland carbon units can be sold to interested parties or used to offset UK based emissions.

Restoring Our Peatlands

Slowly, our rural communities are waking up to the importance of preserving our peatlands. Environmental initiatives to restore peatlands are taking place within the public and private sectors. Companies within high carbon footprint industries like energy and aviation are investing in peatland restoration projects to offset their emissions, making it a lucrative prospect for landowners.

Why purchase Peatland Code carbon units?

Peatlands are a key part of our natural capital worth £billions in terms of the services they can provide. Restoring peatlands not only contributes to climate change efforts, it can also:
• improve drinking water quality
• slow surface water flow, helping prevent flooding
• provide habitat for unique biodiversity.

Each peatland restoration project is unique, and a project can be found to meet the specific needs of each individual buyer. Opportunities are also available for staff and customers to see first-hand the benefits for nature and people of these natural places via site visits.” – IUCN UK Peatland Programme (iucn-uk-peatlandprogramme.org)
